Advantages to Using Powder Coating
1. Powder coating can produce coatings without running or sagging.
2. Painting process can be shortened because setting is not needed after coating.
3. Powder coating process is simple.
4. Adhered coating produces 100% film of paint.
5. Depending on the process, powder coating can produce film of 40?m – 50?m thickness.
a. Powder coating process reduces hazardous waste, prevents poisoning, and occurrence of fire by not requiring solvent to
keep the binder and filler part in a liquid suspension form.
b. Storing and managing is easy because the paint is in the powder form and emits zero or near zero volatile organic
compounds (VOC).
Electrostatic Spray Painting
In electrostatic spray painting the atomized particles are made to be negatively charged, thereby repelling each other and spreading themselves evenly as they exit the spray nozzle. The object being painted is positively charged and grounded. The paint is then attracted to the object giving a more even coat than wet spray painting, and also increasing the percentage of paint that sticks to the object. Moreover, after reaching a certain thickness the paint particles repulse to limit the width. The object is then heated, and the powder melts into a uniform film, and is then cooled to form a hard coating.
Pre-treatment Process
1. Surface treatment and paint
Removal of oil, soil, lubrication greases, metal oxides, welding scales etc. is essential prior to the powder coating process
to increase the adhesion and to prevent bubbles, cracks, and peels.
2. Purpose of Surface Treatment
a. Improves the corrosion resistance.
b. Clean the surface and improve the bonding of the powder to the surface
c. Gives the paint affinity and wettability.
d. Remove the unevenness to smooth the surface.
3. Conversion Coating Process
Phosphate coating (Cold-rolled steel, galvanized steel)
Remove grease ? wash ? (surface control) ? anodizing ? wash ? deionize? dry
